Back Pain Evaluation

Back pain can affect mobility, sleep, work and everyday activity.

Understanding back pain evaluation

A clinical assessment looks at the onset and pattern of pain, symptoms into the legs, previous injuries, medical history and any changes in movement or strength. Your physician discusses whether additional assessment or treatment is appropriate.

What to expect

During a visit, the physician may discuss the history of your symptoms, past treatment, relevant records, and any activity limitations. The examination and next steps depend on your medical needs.

To help prepare, bring a medication list, relevant imaging reports or test results if available, and any referral or authorization paperwork requested by the scheduling team.

This page is educational, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. If you have sudden severe weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe symptoms after trauma, or another emergency, seek emergency care.

Back Pain Evaluation — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions. Recommendations depend on your individual medical evaluation.

When should I seek medical care for back pain?

Seek evaluation when back pain lasts, worsens, limits daily activities or follows an injury. New bowel or bladder dysfunction, saddle numbness, severe weakness or fever with severe back pain require urgent medical assessment.

Can a work injury cause back pain?

Yes. Lifting, repetitive bending, falls and awkward or sustained positions can contribute to back injuries. The physician assesses symptoms, neurological findings, job demands and possible activity modifications.

What can a physician assess during an appointment?

A back-pain evaluation may include spinal movement, strength, reflexes, sensation, gait and tests for possible nerve irritation. Imaging or EMG/NCS is ordered only when indicated by the clinical findings.
