Electrodiagnostic Testing (EMG/NCS)

Electrodiagnostic testing may help a clinician assess certain nerve and muscle problems.

Understanding electrodiagnostic testing (emg/ncs)

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are tests used when clinically appropriate to investigate particular symptoms, including numbness, weakness or suspected nerve injury. The physician determines whether testing is indicated and explains what to expect.

What to expect

During a visit, the physician may discuss the history of your symptoms, past treatment, relevant records, and any activity limitations. The examination and next steps depend on your medical needs.

To help prepare, bring a medication list, relevant imaging reports or test results if available, and any referral or authorization paperwork requested by the scheduling team.

This page is educational, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. If you have sudden severe weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe symptoms after trauma, or another emergency, seek emergency care.

Electrodiagnostic Testing (EMG/NCS) — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions. Recommendations depend on your individual medical evaluation.

What are EMG and nerve conduction studies?

Nerve conduction studies measure responses in nerves after brief electrical stimulation. Needle EMG evaluates electrical activity in selected muscles. Together, they can help assess certain nerve or muscle disorders.

Are electrodiagnostic tests always necessary for numbness?

No. The physician first considers the pattern of symptoms and examination results. Testing may be helpful for selected cases, but it is not required for every episode of tingling or pain.

How should I prepare for EMG/NCS testing?

Tell the clinic about implanted devices, blood-thinning medications, bleeding conditions and skin concerns. Follow the office’s preparation instructions; avoid applying lotion on the day of testing if instructed.

Can EMG determine the exact cause of every pain problem?

No. Electrodiagnostic testing has limitations and does not evaluate every source of pain. Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, clinical examination and other tests.
