Knee Pain Evaluation

Knee pain may make walking, stairs and exercise more difficult.

Understanding knee pain evaluation

Assessment may include questions about swelling, instability, twisting injury, knee motion and impact on daily activity. Recommendations depend on examination and history.

What to expect

During a visit, the physician may discuss the history of your symptoms, past treatment, relevant records, and any activity limitations. The examination and next steps depend on your medical needs.

To help prepare, bring a medication list, relevant imaging reports or test results if available, and any referral or authorization paperwork requested by the scheduling team.

This page is educational, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. If you have sudden severe weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe symptoms after trauma, or another emergency, seek emergency care.

Knee Pain Evaluation — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions. Recommendations depend on your individual medical evaluation.

What can cause knee pain?

Knee pain may result from overuse, ligament or meniscus injury, arthritis, tendon problems or traumatic impact. History and examination help determine whether imaging or other evaluation is useful.

When should I seek care for an injured knee?

Seek prompt care for a hot swollen joint, fever, inability to bear weight, severe deformity, or locking after an injury. Persistent pain or swelling also warrants evaluation.

Are PRP injections an option for knee osteoarthritis?

PRP is being studied for knee osteoarthritis, with variable study quality and inconsistent outcomes. Some patients may discuss it as an option, but it is not a cure and should not replace established care without informed evaluation.
