Neck Pain Evaluation

Neck pain may follow an injury or develop with repetitive activities.

Understanding neck pain evaluation

Evaluation considers the circumstances, neck mobility, associated headaches, shoulder or arm symptoms, and neurologic complaints. After a vehicle collision, the medical history can help guide whether further assessment is needed.

What to expect

During a visit, the physician may discuss the history of your symptoms, past treatment, relevant records, and any activity limitations. The examination and next steps depend on your medical needs.

To help prepare, bring a medication list, relevant imaging reports or test results if available, and any referral or authorization paperwork requested by the scheduling team.

This page is educational, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. If you have sudden severe weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe symptoms after trauma, or another emergency, seek emergency care.

Neck Pain Evaluation — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions. Recommendations depend on your individual medical evaluation.

What might cause neck pain?

Neck pain can be related to muscle strain, joint changes, posture, repetitive activity or trauma. Pain radiating into the arm, numbness or weakness may suggest nerve involvement and warrants evaluation.

Could neck pain be related to a car accident?

Yes. Rapid changes in head and neck movement during a collision can produce symptoms, sometimes with delayed onset. The physician evaluates the history and examination findings, and checks for signs requiring further assessment.

When is urgent care needed for neck pain?

Urgent assessment is needed with significant trauma, fever and neck stiffness, new weakness, difficulty walking, or severe headache with neurological symptoms.
