Nerve Pain & Numbness Evaluation

Tingling, numbness, weakness or radiating pain may have several possible causes.

Understanding nerve pain & numbness evaluation

Clinical assessment may include a neurologic examination and, if indicated, consideration of electrodiagnostic testing. Testing is not appropriate for every symptom and must be decided with the treating physician.

What to expect

During a visit, the physician may discuss the history of your symptoms, past treatment, relevant records, and any activity limitations. The examination and next steps depend on your medical needs.

To help prepare, bring a medication list, relevant imaging reports or test results if available, and any referral or authorization paperwork requested by the scheduling team.

This page is educational, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. If you have sudden severe weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe symptoms after trauma, or another emergency, seek emergency care.

Nerve Pain & Numbness Evaluation — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions. Recommendations depend on your individual medical evaluation.

What does nerve pain feel like?

Nerve-related symptoms may include burning, electric-shock sensations, tingling, numbness or weakness. Their distribution can help a clinician identify possible nerve involvement.

What is the role of EMG/NCS in nerve pain?

Electrodiagnostic testing can help evaluate selected conditions such as peripheral nerve injury, entrapment or radiculopathy when the examination suggests these possibilities.

When are nerve symptoms an emergency?

Sudden weakness, facial droop, difficulty speaking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly progressive neurological problems require emergency evaluation.
