Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) is a physician specialty focused on function and quality of life.

Understanding physical medicine and rehabilitation

At ReMD, a PM&R visit may include discussion of your injury history, physical examination, review of records and the ways symptoms affect work, mobility and daily activities. Recommendations are individualized; the appropriate next step depends on your evaluation.

What to expect

During a visit, the physician may discuss the history of your symptoms, past treatment, relevant records, and any activity limitations. The examination and next steps depend on your medical needs.

To help prepare, bring a medication list, relevant imaging reports or test results if available, and any referral or authorization paperwork requested by the scheduling team.

This page is educational, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. If you have sudden severe weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe symptoms after trauma, or another emergency, seek emergency care.
Technology-supported rehabilitation

Emsculpt NEO Functional for muscle re-education and recovery

For selected patients, physician-supervised neuromuscular stimulation may complement an individualized physical medicine and rehabilitation plan.

Muscle loss from inactivity

Muscle disuse can occur when injury, illness or recovery limits normal movement. Emsculpt NEO has an FDA-cleared rehabilitative indication for prevention or retardation of disuse atrophy in specified treatment areas.

Muscle re-education and movement

Neuromuscular stimulation may be considered as an adjunct for muscle re-education, maintaining or increasing range of motion, and rehabilitation-related function goals.

Muscle spasms and pain-related limitations

Its cleared neuromuscular indications include relaxation of muscle spasms. Pain may have many causes; it requires clinical assessment, and Emsculpt NEO is not presented here as a stand-alone treatment for chronic pain or injury.

Is Emsculpt NEO Functional appropriate for you?

Dr. Retodo evaluates the nature of the injury, muscle function, medical history and any implanted devices or other contraindications before recommending an adjunctive treatment. Outcomes vary. Treatment does not replace rehabilitation exercises or other medically indicated care.

The manufacturer's October 2024 announcement described FDA clearance for neuromuscular stimulation for rehabilitative use in the arms or legs. Claims depend on the device model, applicator and cleared labeling. Please confirm treatment availability and suitability when scheduling. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions. Recommendations depend on your individual medical evaluation.

What does a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician do?

A PM&R physician evaluates how injury or illness affects movement, strength, nerves and daily function. Care may combine diagnostic assessment, rehabilitation planning, nonoperative treatments and coordination with other clinicians.

How can Emsculpt NEO be incorporated into functional rehabilitation?

For appropriately selected patients, neuromuscular stimulation may be considered as an adjunct to a broader rehabilitation program. Device-specific FDA-cleared indications and the applicator used govern claims regarding muscle re-education, disuse atrophy, muscle spasms or range of motion; it does not replace therapeutic exercise.

Can muscle stimulation replace physical therapy?

No. Muscle stimulation may complement clinician-directed rehabilitation, but functional recovery also depends on safe movement, progressive strengthening, balance, and addressing the underlying condition.

Does Emsculpt NEO cure muscle loss or chronic pain?

No device should be presented as a stand-alone cure for age-related sarcopenia, persistent pain or injury. The physician must determine whether this technology is appropriate based on diagnosis, contraindications and the specific cleared indications.

Is Emsculpt NEO suitable for someone with a pacemaker or implant?

An implanted electronic device can be a contraindication to certain muscle stimulation therapies. Disclose pacemakers, implanted devices, pregnancy, recent surgery and all other health conditions before treatment; the clinic should apply the exact device labeling.

Emsculpt NEO Functional: physician-directed muscle stimulation

In selected rehabilitation settings, neuromuscular stimulation may complement a medical plan for impaired muscle function. The BTL-899MS platform has an FDA 510(k) clearance (K240234), but the exact marketed device, applicator and instructions for use must be matched to the practice’s equipment before making indication-specific claims.

Examples of general cleared indications for powered muscle stimulators may include muscle re-education, prevention or retardation of disuse atrophy, relaxation of muscle spasms and maintaining or increasing range of motion. Not every indication applies to every device or operating mode. Emsculpt NEO is not presented as a cure for chronic pain, injury, sarcopenia or neurological disease.
